CBS6s Mark Holmberg said the Honda Civic women was driving on Wednesday was crushed through the booms of a quality crane that were scraped off a flatbed truck through the First Street bridge Wednesday afternoon.

LeGrand told CBS6 the primary Street bridge I-95 in Richmond was internal 1958, and its clearance height varies on the entire bridge.

At the smallest point for the First Street bridge, the clearance height is thirteen feet eleven inches, however the truck involved in Wednesdays incident hit the bridge with a point the place that the clearance height in fourteen feet five inches, according to LeGrand.

That is 24 months before modern bridge height standards took effect, based on the U.S. Department of transportations website.

The DOT website says prior to 1960, 14 feet was sufficient with the minimum height of the bridge.
But, after 1960, the minimum height for just a bridge grew up to 16 feet.

Virginia law requires all trucks to become 13 feet 6 inches or shorter, and police charged the motive force involved in Wednesdays crash with equipment being over height.

Truck drivers we spoke to said it falls with them to ensure their trucks will not exceed 13 feet 6 inches.
In case you load a truck, measure it, when youre done, measure it again, veteran teamster, Jay Ball said.
Definitely be aware of your road signs for ones bridges springing up, new teamster, Marvin Fye said.
Still, CBS 6 wished to know why the bridge hasnt been rebuilt to fulfill modern height standards, especially, after LeGrand confirmed Wednesdays crash wasnt initially the primary Street bridge have been hit by way of a truck.

LeGrand said there aren’t any offers rebuild the primary Street bridge because it’s in good shape.
However, you will find plans to rebuild another bridge on I-95 up the road in Hanover, the Lewistown Bridge.
The clearance height on that bridge is 14 feet, 7 inches, but VDOT intends to reconstruct the bridge to over 16 feet to create it in line with modern standards.

LeGrand said the Lewistown Bridge is a priority for VDOT due to its condition, widening needs, and turn lane needs.

Netherlands Bulk Freight and Container Handling Proves Rich Pickings for Liebherr Cranes

03/03/2014 16:05

Mobile Harbour Equipment and Straddle Carriers both Liked by Dutch Customers

IRELAND C GERMANY C THE NETHERLANDS C crane manufacturers Liebherr has seen success recently within the Dutch market using the commissioning of seven from the groups straddle carriers the other of the versatile mobile harbour cranes (MHC) all during the past couple of weeks. The straddle carriers, able to stacking 1 over 2 containers high, having a safe working load of 40 tonnes, were for your ECT Delta Terminal in Rotterdam whilst the MHC attained a fresh export terminal in Amsterdam.

ECT Delta Terminal would be the largest terminal in Europe and something from the major continental trade gateways as well as the straddle carriers, given a Stinis spreader, operate from the landside interface zone, shuttling between automatic stacking quality crane and trucks. Additionally the straddles will handle multi trailers for intra terminal transfer for onward transport by train or barge. The Liebherr straddle carriers are linked to an online positional tracking system, providing real-time accurate information on the position and handling rates of containers inside terminal. Liebherrs Product Manager, Mobile, Paul Bolger, commented:

The investment by ECT Terminal in Rotterdam of Liebherr straddle carriers illustrates our capacity to produce an economical state of the art product having the ability to work in the worlds most advanced facilities.

Established in 1972, Maja is well-famous for its expertise in loading and unloading of bulk goods, operating a number of seven floating cranes in a variety of ports. Because of increasing business, the organization opted for this, its first Liebherr mobile crane a type LHM 550, to be able to upgrade its facilities. Providing a maximum lifting capacity of 124 tonnes and an outreach all the way to 48 metres, the crane has two winches for highly efficient scrap handling. In four-rope grab operation the maximum lifting capacity is 75 tonnes and most 40 tonnes at 43 metres outreach.

Nothing could illustrate the efficiency with which Liebherr can operate so much because recent MHC order. In late November, the Maja Stuwadoors Group B.V. (Maja) and Liebherr were in contact in my ballet shoes. After negotiations in December, the contract was signed in January. Manufactured and tested in Rostock, the crane was delivered fully assembled, just one month after signing. Right after rolling-journey barge, the crane was ready for operation in mid February.

The LHM 550 significantly increases our scrap handling capacity. Moreover, our portfolio comprises a number of other materials and on account of its flexibility the modern machine could be operated wherever it is required, especially in peak times. On that basis, our customers will strongly make use of this investment.

The newest crane was needed to equip a fresh export terminal opened through the ALBA group which supplies a range of environmental services and it is a serious client for Maja Stuwadoors. Your machine under consideration was chosen as a result of its versatility, the principle cargo concerned being scrap and this can be a tricky proposition because of its variable nature, and therefore before any work was undertaken with all the new machine Majas crane drivers underwent thorough instruction covering all operational topics along with safety features. Arie Holleman, Director at Maja Stuwadoors explained why the corporation chose the Liebherr machine, saying:

The delivery of the latest LHM 550 also represents a milestone in orders for Liebherr Maritime Cranes, in total the software creator has now delivered thirty mobile harbour used cranes towards Netherlands. Maja Director Marco Holleman, concluded:

Business is increasing and fast delivery was extremely important for individuals. The close and professional collaboration between both partners was impressive and facilitated a quick delivery time.

Pink crane at St. Joseph’s Hospital coming down

03/03/2014 15:57

A London landmark, albeit a short lived one, is arriving down. The dismantling of what’s considered to be the earth’s only big pink crane looking at St. Joseph’s Hospital started on Tuesday.

Located at the corner of Richmond and Grosvenor streets, the quality crane was a show of support with the hospital’s role in breast care.

Ryan Simmons, a construction manager with Ellis Don, explains the procedure to take down the 220 foot crane.

“We attract a mobile crane and that crane will in reality begin by taking down the rigging so that all the cables fall first. Then your mobile crane requires down chunks with the boom and lay them on a flatbed truck.”

So even though it is very good news to see it coming down, the crane is becoming something of an icon.
It’s been written up in construction publications as well as vivid pink colour has been beacon for cancers of the breast survivors.

The main one-of-a form crane found its way to London in March 2013 for construction of the superstructure in the 65,000 sq ft addition to St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Dr. Gillian Kernaghan, president and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Care says “After we think about the crane decreasing this would mean that individuals have no need for it any further. This would mean the essential framework can there be and we’re in time additionally , on budget.”

Dismantling the crane was supposed to take about 12 hours to perform.

The modern wing with the hospital is predicted being completed by spring 2015.

“This crane has become special to everyone, but so far as its assembly and dismantle the crane it’s been business as usual,” Simmons says.

Omar Aziz was expected to look at the stadium on Friday to announce the inauguration date, though the visit was canceled with the worker’s death.

The Arena da Amazonia is among the five stadiums still being built for your World Cup. Brazil promised all 12 venues can be ready from the end of not too long ago, well in front of the June 12 opener, but only seven are completed. Six ones would have to be ready for the Confederations Cup warm-up tournament last June.

Organizers said Friday the accident would not restrict the stadium’s construction because the used cranes had been stripped away from the venue’s main construction area.

The worker who died was labeled as Antonio Jose Pita Martins, who was simply earning a living for the Portuguese company Martifer, a multinational focused in metal constructions.

Authorities are investigating the accident and public prosecutors said they’re going to halt construction if safety conditions at the site are certainly not adequate.

Seven workers have died at World Cup venues so far. In late November, two workers were killed when a crane collapsed while hoisting a 500-ton bit of roofing with the stadium that can host the earth Cup opener in Sao Paulo. In 2012, a staff died in the construction site on the stadium inside nation’s capital, Brasilia.

Brazil has been with a spotlight for the problematic World Cup preparations, while using southern host capital of scotland – Curitiba still in danger of being dropped as a result of delay in stadium construction. Handling the pressure

03/02/2014 15:58

Rigging and hoist devices are a vital point about this industry and recent product developments in this field show that innovation is moving at a fun filled pace.

Productivity and effectiveness are inevitably high on the report on requirements for virtually every customer thinking about in new rigging and hoist equipment. Safety, needless to say, can also be the main point on the agenda. We look on the a few of the latest developments on this part of the material lifting sector and benefits they feature the tip user.

Columbus McKinnon
The manufacturer has added new variable frequency drives and spark-resistant choices to its Yale Global King and Shaw-BoxWorld Series electric wire rope hoists. In line with Columbus McKinnon the hoists take advantage of variable frequency drives that enable greater speed adjustment, improved load control and duty cycles.

The manufacturer’s variable frequency drives options on monorail, top-running double girder and its particular deck-mounted Global King andWorld Series hoists.

These hoists also arrive designed with numerous security measures offering overload and more than-speed protection in addition to on-thespot safety readouts for immediate troubleshooting.

Moreover, Columbus McKinnon’s explosion-proof Global King and World Series hoists is now able to specified with spark-resistant options, that offer added safety and protection in environments where flammable gases and liquids are mixed together.

Central to upgrades are bronze sheaves, bronze trolley wheels, copper-plated or bronze load hook, and drop stops with rubber bumpers.

RUD
As RUD highlights, companies will often be unaware how the direction with the pull may have a major have an effect on the significant load limit of the standard eyebolt, which can in return, build a safety breach.
In accordance with RUD, the perfect solution is is by using a suitable lifting point that may conform to the direction from the pull, allowing full engagement from the bolt, which results in a very safe lift. To combat this, RUD has manufactured lifting points that are claimed to sit in the direction in the pull.

The Starpoint removes the potential risk of bent eyes, backed out threads, or higher-tightening and arrives that has a florescent pink powder coating that changes colour in the event the temperature exceeds over 200C. Should the product reaches temperatures up to 400C, this colour changes into a deep black with small bubbles, which indicates who’s have been over-heated.

One of these brilliant is RUD Starpoint VRS, that could swivel on the direction with the load lift. Because of this, the working load limit is therefore always on the direction with the load.

Van Beest
Van Beest enjoyed an excellent 2013, a period capped by taking home the accolade of ‘LEEA Most Innovative Product Award 2013′ with the recent LiftEx event because of its P-5365 – Green Pin ROV Release Polar Shackles, with locking clamp product.

Consequently, ROV lifting equipment can often be brightly coloured or fluorescent to assist the operator in identifying the components in poor or artificial light under water. The shackle may have a certain design that will only to produce load, only retrieve a load, or if need be, are able to do both.

The P-5365 originates from Van Beest’s range of ROV shackles, that happen to be suitable for subsea use and operation by a remote operated vehicle. Using the manufacturer, the Remote Operated Vehicle is suited that has a hydraulically controlled arm, which may safely release heavy equipment under water.

Its Green Pin ROV Release Polar Shackles, with locking clamp is utilized when multiple sling legs are utilized, or if you find a risk for side loads. Van Beest recommends a specially-designed locking clamp with a securing spring pin to be played with. The locking clamp replaces the functionality of the standard nut.

Tway Lifting Products
The Indianapolis-based business has produced its initial two-inch diameter wire rope sling which has a supreme strength of 370,000 pounds.

Peter Hansen, president and CEO at Tway, tells Hoist: “Making a Wire Rope Products Plant in Indiana strengthened our position with all the industrial sector inside Midwest and brings another manufactured product to the state.

“We routinely manufacture slings through 2″ diameter and find the machinery to provide 3″ if when needed. Our 24,000-foot plant houses warehousing operations, sling production with 4 swaging machines and proof load testing up to 220,000 pounds.”

One of several major projects Tway has been linked to may be the Cowboys Stadium in Texas, while using the company supplying 11,000 feet of a single-1/2″ galvanized wire rope for your project.

Red Rooster Industrial (UK)
The organization went from strength-to-strength in 2013, expanding into your Midlands and Poland, likewise increasing its selection of hoists with the help of its TCS-500 high-speed air hoist. This new configuration is pitched as a high-speed, low weight version on the company’s TCR- 250 hoist.

Incorporating new speed adjustment screws enables the operator to independently adjust lifting and lowering speeds. Furthermore, the TCS hoist could be supplied as hook suspension or equally, included in the firm’s portfolio of push, pneumatic, or geared trolleys.

The single fall 500kg TCS-500 weighs less than 16 KG and possesses a closed height look of 410mm. Based on the manufacturer, the hoist can lift at rates of 17m/min with a full load, a speed that increased to 43m/min when unloaded.

The TCS air hoist can be provided with cord control or a shockproof polycarbonate pendant control, this features an infinitely variable speed control that is claimed to provide “superb control” for accurate positioning.
SWF Krantechnik
SWF Krantechnik’s electric hoist, ChainsterGT, incorporates a preprogrammed integrated frequency hoist inverter, which is stored inside hoist casing. Infrastructure investment.

The hoist can be employed for a array of speeds when partial plenty of under 30% are handled, the hoist speed may be doubled. Equally, the electric hoist operator can adopt lower speeds when specific, precise load movements are needed.

Moreover, the new method is available with a maximum hook as standard, that makes it well suited for loads nearly 2,5000kg, while push trolleys and motor trolleys are optional extras.

In accordance with SWF Krantechnik, the ChainsterGT uses load summation, which calculates the remaining safe working period while overhead protection is additionally guaranteed both mechanically and electronically.

J D Neuhaus

Local governments confront questionable claims

03/02/2014 15:53

Cops rushed in to the downtown parking garage, weapons drawn.

As Detective Anthony Fata sat bleeding from a leg wound, officers scrambled around corners or over stairwells, frantically buying “junkie-looking black male.” The decorated 14-year veteran who’d made the emergency call Signal 13: Officer Down spoke of a violent struggle through which he was shot close up. He also said he had fallen down a direct flight ticket of stairs while unloading his .40-caliber Glock, dislocating a shoulder.

But within times of the fruitless look for an opponent, doubts arose about Fata’s version of events. And the months to come, it unraveled completely. After he sought workers’ compensation benefits worth about $78,000 for his injuries, prosecutors said he actually shot himself, anf the husband was in prison for perjury and fraud.

“Where there’s money, there’s gonna be crime. And where there’s government money, it’s all the more,” says Frank G. Scafidi, director of public affairs with the National Insurance Crime Bureau, which represents 1,100 insurance providers. “You will discover those who discover how to game the device, and they are great at it.”
A Baltimore Sun analysis of hundreds of documents obtained through Public Information Act requests, along with court public records, showed many claims that have been seen to be fraudulent.

Fata’s conviction a year ago was an unusually high-profile illustration showing abuse in Maryland’s workers’ compensation system, which made $395 million in awards in 2013. But state officials as well as other experts the recurring problem helps drive up costs that Maryland taxpayers ultimately bear.

For instance, nowadays, the state of hawaii won a $42,000 theft case against an urban area Housing Authority employee who worked another job while claiming to become can not perform his city duties as a result of “feeling annoying in her elbow.” In another case, a state Developmental Disabilities Administration employee was caught “double-dipping” on a second job. Along with a city jail employee who claimed he couldn’t work because he’d injured his shoulder lifting equipment was caught moonlighting.

Carmine G. D’Alessandro, assistant V.P. of legal services for Chesapeake Employers’ Insurance Co., which handles such claims to the state and companies, says claims officers frequently must repel questionable cases. Usually, he says, claims officers are confronted with exaggerations, in lieu of baldfaced lies.

Chesapeake Employers’ Insurance also scrutinizes doctors. An assessment cases spurred an investigation from the state Board of Physicians that generated the revocation associated with an orthopedic surgeon’s license in February.
City officials are concerned about rising workers’ compensation costs one example is, claims and also other program expenses for instance attorney fees cost Baltimore $49 million recently, up from $44 million couple of years earlier. The system was designed to compensate government and corporate workers injured practical for lost wages, medical expenses and any lasting disability, like the partial or total loss of a physique part.
Local officials say they vigorously fight claims believe that to become false. Nonetheless they acknowledge they’ve already little power over payouts ordered in appeals to the state Workers’ Compensation Commission or over Maryland law, which sets rates for awards.

“The general consensus is that only 5 to 10 percent are the poor examples,” he explained. “90 % are pure legit. It’s that ten percent that muck it down. … When you’re embellishing to obtain additional money, we merely attempt to beat you back. Now, are the type little white lies including? Of course, those are adding 1000s of dollars somewhere.”

“When somebody gets hurt practical and situations are legitimate, we would like them dealt with,” said Douglas Kerr, the city’s risk manager. “If you’re likely to play a game title or make an effort to work the system, our goal is always to try and nip that within the bud and keep our costs down.”

Workers’ compensation payments can total hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Under family and divorce laws, employees who will be too injured to figure can receive two-thirds of their salaries, tax-free, approximately $998 weekly.

Once workers reach what doctors consider “maximum medical improvement,” regulations permits payments all the way to $167 7 days for less severe injuries like bruises, $333 7 days for more significant injuries including those requiring surgery and $749 for injuries that seriously limit the usage of an arm, leg or other body part.
Along payment varies in line with the injury. A hurt back entitles a staff to up to 500 weeks of payments; a damaged arm or leg is qualified to receive nearly 300 weeks; and injuries to your foot, hand or eye may bring payments for 250 weeks.

E.g., if a doctor deemed that employee’s foot was 20 percent permanently damaged, that could mean 50 weeks of $167 payments to get a total of $8,350.
Localities can supply more generous benefits for lost pay. In Baltimore, city employees too injured to figure receive temporary disability payments corresponding to totally of the salaries, without taxes deducted. Budget director Andrew Kleine says town is trying to barter a decrease in benefits to 2-thirds associated with an employee’s salary, which he says is within line with the information other jurisdictions pay.

New equipment in gym

03/02/2014 15:50

Twelve new pieces of circuit-training weight-lifting equipment and also a new treadmill that can hit a 30-degree incline twice as steep as older treadmills are situated in place with the Bee-Fit Wellness Center at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) Port Hueneme.

The FreeMotion machines are created to mimic day-to-day chores carried out by a wide range of people: Sailors lifting equipment, pushing, pulling and carrying; workers in offices turning at their desks; senior citizens going up stairs with groceries.

The emphasis this is on functional fitness and preventing injury operate, explained Ramona Pagel, manager on the Bee-Fit. The complete purpose is always to keep people healthy, productive and doing what they need to be doing.

In mid-April, seven items of FreeMotion equipment and also new treadmills is going to be installed at Warfield Gym, according to Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) managers aboard.

The equipment, valued at a lot more than $22,000, originated a $300,000 Navy Fitness grant that’s supplying new equipment to installations worldwide within the Navys new training regimen called NOFFS Navy Operational Fitness and Fueling System.

Important different is it uses hand grips and foot straps as an alternative to bars so users can rotate their arms and legs and increase the range of flexion.

Such as older Life Exercise equipment, FreeMotion incorporates a system of cables, pulleys and weights that permits the consumer to manage the intensity of the workout.

Each piece also allows users to take a seat or stand; standing works the core and strengthens balance.

Kovit Markklam, a retiree who now works in quality control and safety, was when using the FreeMotion lift machine a short time following your equipment was installed. It mimics a dieing lift and strengthens the extremities and lower back.

Its awesome, he was quoted saying. Its a great deal smoother as opposed to older machines.

Pagel said the lift forces users to mimic the motions they do at work plus day-to-day life and strengthen the muscles utilised in those motions.

Lifting and turning require strong hips and core in addition to strong extremities, she said.

Getting into a lunge works different leg and hip muscles and strengthens an alternative the main core.

The FreeMotion step machine also works the core, legs and hips. In case your user turns sideways, it mimics a fully different everyday motion: getting back in and away from a higher truck or van.

Another 10 machines would be the squat, quad, hamstring, abdominal, row, bicep, tricep, shoulder, chest and lat.

Each machine has drawings that report the proper way to do different exercises.

Pagel offered the few suggestions here:

Always start low with the weights and build-up with time. Excessive weight too early can harm the very muscles youre trying to strengthen.

Make certain your core is strong and tight before even thinking about lifting equipment. Press the bellybutton to the spine, is when Pagel puts it.

Start slow over a new machine. Do one set and wait to see in which youre sore the following day and adjust accordingly, Pagel advised. I see people appear in and do two or three sets after which it struggle to walk in the morning. Go slow.

She recommends that because its a circuit-training system, do one assault everything to find out the way it operates.

The brand new FreeMotion treadmill supplies the most intense workout of any treadmill on base, Pagel said.

At a 30-degree incline, just walking provides you with an intense workout, she said.

The Bee-Fit is open from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
