Giant gantry crane arrives at Vancouver Shipyards
FEBRUARY 20, 2014 �� After months of planning and anticipation, Seaspan’s new 300-tonne gantry crane arrive at Vancouver Shipyards, Vancouver, BC today. When erected, the colossal crane is definitely the largest gantry crane in Canada, towering 80 m high and spanning 76 m wide.
“The transformation of Vancouver Shipyards has been incredible even as continue to create a world-class shipbuilding and ship repair center of excellence within the West Coast,” said Brian Carter, President of Seaspan Shipyards. “Today’s event can be a further demonstration of Seaspan’s huge resolve forpersistance to paying for people, processes and equipment, and is also the modern landmark in the future with the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy.”
The appearance on the used gantry cranes is often a significant milestone in Vancouver Shipyard’s $200 million modernization project, which began construction in October 2012 and it is scheduled to finish from the fall of 2014. It supply a new state-of-the-art facility, allowing Seaspan to efficiently deliver Non-combat vessels for your Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard.
Assembly, hook-up, testing and commissioning with the crane is estimated to take place within the next almost a year, with completion targeted for come july 1st.
Because massive size, the used gantry cranes was shipped in three large pieces �C the fixed leg, hinged leg and main girder – as well as many smaller aspects of China by using a deep sea ship to Fraser Surrey Docks, before being offloaded and transported to Seaspan’s North Vancouver location.
“Once operational, this crane plays a pivotal role in our shipbuilding business well into the future,” said Mr. Carter. “It is a very exciting time at Seaspan Shipyards. Besides are our new facilities taking shape, but development activities are moving full-steam ahead as we prepare to develop the next generation of vessels for the people of the Canadian Coast Guard in October 2014.”
